Geisinger Health System's ACGME-approved Clinical Informatics Fellowship.

Geisinger Clinical Informatics challenges common practice, embeds best practice, carefully applies cutting edge technology, and facilitates discovery through the application of informatics. The group incorporates the Geisinger vision and mission into the Information System, from the ground up, and makes use of data collected as a by-product of clinical care for secondary purposes, such as for research, education, and financial sustainability, to maximize the healthcare value for Geisinger's patients.

Geisinger's Division of Applied Research and Clinical Informatics (DARCI) oversees Geisinger's EHR Clinical Transformation, Clinical Mobility Strategy and Data Science departments with the goal to harmonize data across the clinical care, research and health plan enterprises. Geisinger Health System's data enterprise system integrates disparate information (clinical, financial and administrative), archives data and provides us with the ability to mine data for secondary use using business intelligence and analytic tools. The Institute of Advanced Application (IAA) combines clinical innovations, (including clinical decision support), new technologies and reengineering initiatives which can be directly implemented and assessed at Geisinger before dissemination nationally and globally. These centers work closely with the Center for Health Research and the Weis Center for Genomic Research.

The core curriculum didactics and clinical experience for Geisinger's Clinical Informatics Fellowship will be primarily organized and implemented through the Division of Applied Research and Clinical Informatics. Our elective curriculum will be offered by our Institute of Advanced Application (health care re-engineering/Human factors and Imaging informatics); Genomic medicine and biomedical informatics through the Weis Center for Genomic Research; Health plan informatics through Geisinger's Health Plan operations; Public health informatics and comparative effectiveness research through our Center for Population Health Research. Clinical research in informatics will be incorporated into the 24-month fellowship where the fellow is allowed to choose a mentor from any of the above centers and ongoing research initiatives.

Fellows will gain exposure to a diverse range of clinical and health information systems by rotating at our various health system hospitals and centers. This will provide fellows with experience in EPIC, Cerner, Phillips based Electronic ICU and our KeyHIE health information exchange. Didactic support will supplement the clinical experience to ensure that fellows learn about the major clinical/information systems that are in use. Our health information exchange and active research into information systems interoperability will provide experience in advanced application of mobile, cloud based interoperable solutions.
