2008 API Lifetime Achievement Award

Michael J. Becich, MD, PhD

 

Michael J. Becich, MD, PhD graduated from Northwestern University’s Medical School and completed training in anatomic pathology at the University of Nebraska and Washington University in St. Louis. He serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Informatics in the Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and as Associate Director of the Clinical & Translational Science Institute. As the Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics, he leads the department’s efforts to apply technologies to advance biomedical research and clinical care. The scope of the department’s research ranges from genomic and proteomic data mining to machine learning and biosurveillance.   

 Dr. Becich’s personal research interests focus on the intersection between translational informatics and bioinformatics. He has expertise in clinical phenotyping of patients for personalized medicine, tissue banking informatics and pathology informatics, and data sharing’s role in clinical informatics and bioinformatics. He continues work on creating analytical pipelines for biomedical big data and to unlock the value of next generation sequencing and imaging for cancer diagnostics through computational pathology.

He is a founding member and the first president of the Association for Pathology Informatics. API is therefore proud to recognize Dr. Becich’s distinguished body of work and contributions to advancing pathology informatics as a core subspecialty discipline in the medical community with its 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award.
