William R. Ditto, MD (deceased, 1926-20060

 

 

The Association for Pathology Informatics is proud to select William R. Dito, MD for its 2004 Honorary Fellow Award in recognition for his contributions to the field. As a graduate of Loyola University School of Medicine, he joined the Army Medical Corps and received an honorable discharge at the rank of Major. In 1976, he moved to LaJolla, California and served as the Division Head of Laboratory Medicine at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation until 1995. 

Dr. Dito also served on multiple editorial boards, including the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Archives of Pathology, and Clinical Laboratory Management Review. He also taught at the University of Arizona Medical School and pursued innovative projects that sought to integrate computers into laboratory medicine. He served as Chairman of the Editorial Board and a member of the Board of Governors with the American College of Pathologists. 

Dr. Dito has received numerous awards over the course of his career, including the President’s Medal at the College of American Pathologists (1997 and 2004), the College’s Frank W. Hartman Memorial Award, the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the CAP/ASCP Distinguished Service Award in 1998.
